John Leederʼs June 2012 Class - Cedar Waxwing Course at Loyalist College

This year John's subject was a Cedar Waxwing.  This beautiful bird was carved with an open beak which was holding a red berry.

Since this was a one week course, John had a mold made of the bird he carved and most carvers practiced painting on it.

Thanks John.

Mentorship Program

Have you always wanted to carve a certain bird but were afraid to ask?

Now is your chance!  Pick the species of bird and Master Carver and World Class Sculptor John Leeder will guide you through the project.  Pace yourself and focus on what you need help with.  Prior to the course you will be required to discuss with John your choice of species, size/scale, pattern and arrange for the cut-out to be done from the blank.

This unique course is designed for those who have learned the basics and want to further challenge themselves.  Carvers can "set their own pace" but are expected to also work at home.  Students will carve, texture, and paint their bird.  Emphasis will be on the various stages of bird carving, shaping, feather groups, imitating feather detail with a wood burner and/or rotary tool, using acrylic paints, exploring painting techniques such as blending, feathering highlights and shadows.  Instruction will also be given on; anatomy, feather diversity, mounting the bird, and mixing colors.
